Adventure Race Preparation - Base Training Closing, Starting the Build

Base training phase is quickly coming to an end for REV3 Shenandoah Epic 26hr Adventure Race.  Hit some good workouts, missed some and supplemented others.

Jan will introduce more specific training to AR and will be last month of heavy lifting in the gym. February will bring more "functional lifting".  Sandbags anyone?!

Still going strong with the daily mile.

I've just heard about something wonderfully awful called cold shower therapy.  Today I fell down the internet hole of trying to identify the perfect AR backpack even though I have more packs than I'd care to admit that would probably get the job done just fine.

Note, the below schedule only lists focused workouts.  I will be running at least a mile a day and possibly bike commuting to work (if I can work up the moxie to fight traffic again in a #NarrowMarginsDumbPeopleSmartPhone era).

  1. Hi!

I just found your blog and I'm training for the same race!
The Rev3 Epic will be my first AR.
I've done 3 Tough Mudders, completed 2 marathons and 2 triathlons and whole bunch of shorter races.

I read your comments above about completing base training and I think I'm further behind in my plan than I'd like to be...

Any way, did you find the perfect bag?
I've spent hours that past week trying to figure out the same thing.
I'm leaning toward the Gregory Z25 or Osprey Manta 20 or 28.
    What did you find?

BTW, I'll be following your blog and training. I hope to gain some insight on what to carry, what to leave in transition, how the whole thing works...

Look forward to reading your thoughts!

  2. Hi Don,

Welcome to AR! It sounds like you've already got a decent background of endurance endeavors and are looking for something more. AR is a great next thing. Don't worry. I'm further behind in training than I'd like to be as well. I aspire to stick to my training plan but inevitably stuff gets in the way or little injuries pop up that derail the train temporarily. Without a plan, I'd likely just fizzle out and find something else to do so at least it gives a framework to ensure some key workouts are in the bag on race day.

I'm by no means an expert but am using this as a place to document the adventure and keep track of helpful information for myself and hopefully others who happen along. I log my training on http://www.attackpoint.org/log.jsp/user_7088. It's not as fancy as other services but has served me well so far.

I checked out the Osprey and Gregory bags you're considering. Both look like they fit the bill very well for AR. They both have the features on my must have list though the Manta 20 might be on the tight side. I've recently gotten a couple of hand me down packs that have put my search for a new one on hold. I"m currently testing out 4 - 5 yr old Mountain Smith Wraith and an Arcteryx Volt. Neither is made any longer but will at least give you an idea what I'm working with. (links below)

Don't hesitate if you've got questions or something to share.

Best of luck in your preparations!

  3. Hey Jesse,

Thanks for the link to Attack Point! I've never heard of that site, but it's perfect, built for AR and orienteering!

Thanks for your blog. It has been such an inspiration, I'm starting my own to chronicle my fight against my decade of obesity and the journey of adventure racing. I hope it inspires and helps others.

I've been doing some research you haven't touched on, so as soon as it's ready, I'll give you the link.
